Frequently Asked Questions
How Far in Advance Should I Schedule an Appointment?
We recommend scheduling a couple of days in advance whenever possible. However, we understand that urgent situations arise — we do accept same-day and emergency appointments if needed.
How Long Does the Euthanasia Process Take?
For most pets, the process takes between 30 minutes to one hour. This allows time for you to say goodbye, for your pet to relax, and for us to proceed at a calm pace to minimize anxiety.
Will Dr. Mccarthy Come Alone?
No. Dr. McCarthy will be accompanied by a certified veterinary technician who assists with IV catheter placement and gentle restraint when needed.
Where in My Home Can the Euthanasia Be Performed?
Anywhere your pet is most comfortable — indoors or outdoors, in a favorite room, on a sunny porch, or in their favorite bed or spot.
Do I Need to Prepare Anything Before the Appointment?
No. We bring everything needed for the service, including chocolate kisses for your pet to enjoy before saying goodbye. You are welcome to offer their favorite treats as well.
Can My Children Be Present?
Yes. Anyone you wish to have present for support is welcome, including children. Be mindful that younger children may have difficulty understanding the process and emotions involved.
Can My Other Pets Be Present?
Yes. Other pets may be included in the farewell if you wish. They often sense that a member of their pack has passed and can pick up on your emotions.
Could My Pet React to the Sedative?
Occasionally, a pet may growl or hiss at the moment of injection due to the “poke” of the needle — not the medicine. The sedative works quickly, bringing relief and calm within seconds.
Could My Pet React to the Euthanasia Solution?
Before the euthanasia solution is given, your pet will already be under anesthesia from the sedative and unaware of what’s happening. Sometimes a pet may vocalize or release a deep breath — this is a normal part of the body’s letting go.
When Will My Pet’s Ashes Be Returned to Me?
We will contact you within 2–3 weeks to arrange a home delivery of your pet’s ashes.
How Does Natural Death Compare to Euthanasia?
Natural death can sometimes mean prolonged pain or suffering. Euthanasia allows you to compassionately relieve your pet’s discomfort. If you are unsure, you may speak with Dr. McCarthy or our technician Marlee for guidance.
When and How is Payment Collected?
Payment is taken over the phone when your appointment is scheduled. Once processed, you will receive an appointment confirmation. Please see our Services & Pricing page for details.
What is Your Cancellation Policy?
If you cancel more than three hours before your appointment, you will receive a full refund. If your appointment is scheduled within three hours of cancellation, a $300 fee will apply.
